Today, on 1st July as India celebrates Doctors Day to honor doctors across the country for their relentless service; we as doctor's feel immense responsibility to keep serving the nation and its people with utmost care and attention. In Ayurveda, a Vaidya or a doctor is the prime amongst the four elements required for a successful treatment. But Mind you, he's not the only one who makes the treatment possible, the other elements also equally serve the purpose. A good synchronization of Vaidya (Doctor), Aushadh (Medicine), Paricharak (Attendant) and Rugna (Patient); is necessary for saving the life of a patient from a miserable disorder.

Having said so, it wont be an exaggeration to state that the Vaidya is the most important amongst all of them. This is because he is "Vidynata" or the one who has knowledge of the medicines, "Shasita" or the one who regulates the attendant to execute his work accurately. Similarly a Vaidya is also "Yokta" or the one who has proper judgement of the disorder of the patient and advises medicine accordingly.

Knowledge of a medicine, alone, is not enough for treating a patient. Success in treatment is achieved only when the drug used is found suitable to the patient, in terms of his Prakruti ( Body Constitution) Desha (Habitat), Kala (Seasonal changes), Dosha imbalances in the body, etc. The one who follows this pattern in treatment, is a Vaidya in true sense, and is far more superior than anyone who has a great deal of knowledge of medicine, alone. The term "Yuktidnya" is very important here, as it suggests the one who is the organizer of medicine customized for each patient. This is the basic principle of Ayurveda treatment and the one who follows it is a real Vaidya.
