Marma Paripalan" is the term used for safeguarding of Vital sites of the body from any harm. On the occasion of World Heart day, we will discussed about factors significant for safeguarding Heart; one of the Vital Site. Following are measures suggested by Ayurveda for Marma Paripalan -
Abadha-Varjan (Avoidance of factors responsible for injury to the Heart)
Svastha-Vritta-Anuvartan (Following Health regimen suggested by Ayurveda)
Utpanna Arti Vighat (Treatment of newly rendered symptoms)
We saw about the first factor in detail in the last article. We will discuss about remaining two factors in this one.
2. Swastha-vritta anuvartan is following Dinacharya (Daily Regimen) and Ritucharya (Seasonal Regimen) suggested by Ayurveda for maintaining Health and prevention of major disorders.
Dinacharya is all about following a routine according to the body type (Constitution of the body - Vata, Pitta, Kapha, Vata-Pitta, Vata-Kapha, Pitta-kapha). Dinacharya can be further divided according to the the diet, lifestyle and Mental factors that need to be followed during this period.
A. Dietary
B. Lifestyle
C. Mental
A. Dietary - Ayurveda has suggested certain food habits which should be followed consistently for maintaining health.
a. Food should be served fresh and hot, as it helps improve appetite and increases the speed of digestion.
b. It should be unctuous, so that it nourishes the body and senses, and increases the strength of the body.
c. It should be consumed in proportion, thus it increases longevity, does not hamper digestive fire and gets digested without unwanted harmful effects (of over consumption).
d. It must be consumed only after the complete digestion of the earlier consumed food or else it would lead to aggravation of dosha's and lead to various disorders in the body.
e. Incompatible foods termed as "Virudha Aahara" in Ayurveda should be avoided. Example Milk and Salty food or Milk and Fruits/ Fish, etc.
f. Appropriate Place and equipment where mind can be focused only on food and not on other things.
g. Food should not be consumed in a hurry or very slowly.
h. It should be consumed without talking, laughing and with proper concentration of the mind (focusing all the senses of sound, touch, sight, taste, smell).
i. Most of all it is important to analyze what is suitable for our own constitution and according to the season.
B. Lifestyle - Following procedures are supposed to be a part of Dinacharya and must be done on a regular basis ( according to physical constitution and season).
a. Anjana - Applying Kajal (collyrium) which kind of cleanses the toxins in the eyes, and keeps eye disorders away.
b. Dhoompana - Inhalation of medicinal smoke through nostrils for clearing the sinuses, chest and head region and thus keeping kapha disorders away.
c. Nasya - Inserting medicinal drops into nostrils for controlling hairfall, hair greying, nourishing the Head region, improving the functions of sense organs, improving sleep quality, avoiding disorders of eyes-ear-nose-mouth-throat-Head.
d. Shiro-Abhyanga - Oiling of head (Head Massage)
e. Pada-Abhyanga - Oiling of foot (Foot Massage)
f. Abhyanga - Oiling of the whole body (Body Massage)
h. Vyayam (Exercise) - Exercise according to the strength of the body.
i. Avoidance of Vega-dharan (Suppression of natural urges of Urine, flatulence, feces, sneeze, cough, sleep, hunger, thirst, vomit)
C. Mental - "Sadvrutta" or following a behavior that is moral according to the societal norms. Like, One should not speak untruth, should not yawn, sneeze or laugh without covering mouth, not desire women other than his wife, stay away from anger and so on.
Ritucharya includes diet and life-style according to the seasonal changes.
The six seasons Shishir (Winter) , Vasant (Spring) , Grishma (Summer), Varsha (Rainy), Sharad (Autumn), Hemant (Pre-winter). that are seen in the Indian subcontinent display varied changes in the environment that affect our body. Therefore dietary, lifestyle and mental factors that are necessary for maintaining health in each season, are followed accordingly. The whole regimen due to its vast length would be summarized in a separate article.
Panchakarma procedures that are required to maintain health in a particular season are Vaman (procedure that ensures removal of toxins by inducing Vomit) in Vasant, Virechan (procedure that ensures removal of toxins through purgation) in Sharad and Basti (medicinal enema that ensures elimination of waste from the body) in Varsha season.
I had a case once, of a young male in his mid twenties; with symptoms of recurrent chest pain on and off. I checked him thoroughly observing his diet and lifestyle regimen. The reason I found out was his abnormal dietary regimen, where he did over eating quite frequently. Similarly consistent consumption of heavy food without the digestion of earlier consumed food was also seen. Suppression of the natural urges like feces, urine and flatulence was a major cause. Avoiding all the above causes and following the rules of Healthy regimen helped the patient to relieve all his symptoms drastically.
3. Utpanna Arti Vighat - Treatment of newly rendered symptoms.
Treatment for heart disease in Ayurveda is either medicinal or related to Panchakarma therapy for physical symptoms. For mental aspect of Heart disorder, much of an importance is given to Satva vriddhi (establishing mental well being through counselling), involvement in various activities that are liked by the patients like Music, art, writing, drama, poetry, etc
